Questions

Mobile Notary FAQ

Straight answers about cost, travel, identification and what a Michigan notary public can and cannot do.

What does a Michigan notary cost?

Michigan law sets a maximum fee a notary public may charge per notarial act. McClain Signature Services charges $10 per notarial act. Mobile service is a separate travel or convenience fee — $20 in Waterford, generally $25–$35 elsewhere in nearby Oakland County, $30 for hospital and assisted-living visits, plus $15 after 6 PM and $20 on weekends. Your full total is confirmed before the appointment.

Do you travel to my location?

Yes. This is a mobile notary service, so appointments take place at your home, office, hospital room, senior community, a public meeting location, or another agreed-upon place.

What areas do you serve?

McClain Signature Services is based in Waterford, Michigan and serves Waterford and Oakland County. Appointments elsewhere in Oakland County may be available depending on the location, distance and availability.

Can a mobile notary come to a hospital or assisted-living facility?

Yes, when the facility permits visitors and the signer is able to communicate, understand the document, and sign willingly. The facility's own visitor rules always apply.

What identification should I bring?

Every signer needs current, valid government-issued photo identification, and the name on the ID must match the name on the document. Please have the ID with you at the appointment.

Can you provide witnesses?

Witnesses are not included in the notarial fee. If your document requires witnesses, tell us on the request form — in many cases it is easiest to bring your own adult witnesses who are not named in the document. We'll confirm what's possible before the appointment.

Can you notarize a power of attorney?

A power of attorney can be notarized when it is already prepared, the signer appears in person with valid ID, and the document has a notarial certificate. McClain Signature Services does not prepare the document or advise on its contents.

Can you notarize estate-planning documents?

Yes, estate-planning documents can be notarized when they are already prepared and the signing requirements are met. Any questions about how the documents should be drafted, signed or witnessed are legal questions for an attorney.

Can you tell me which type of notarization I need?

No. A Michigan notary public is not an attorney and cannot choose the notarial act for you or give legal advice. The document itself, the agency receiving it, or your attorney determines which act is required.

Do I need to sign my document before the appointment?

Please do not sign in advance unless the document instructs otherwise. Most notarial acts require the signer to sign, or acknowledge their signature, in the notary's presence.

How quickly can I request an appointment?

Requests can be submitted at any time through the form on this page. Submitting a request does not confirm an appointment — you'll be contacted to confirm availability and the total price.
